Predicting 2024 Fashion Trends

With the new year, comes new fashion trends. Trend predictions do not come out of thin air with innovators being the first to pick up a trend. The early adopters are usually the ones influencing the early majority. Once the trend gets more attention from influencers and the early majority, the trend is accepted by the late majority, thus making the trend mainstream. I am going to be predicting early fashion trends I believe will eventually be picked up by the late majority.

By no means should you feel compelled to follow these trends if they become popular. If you decide to participate in these trends, to avoid over-consumption, consider finding these trends at thrift stores as a sustainable alternative and choose to participate in trends that you believe embody a timeless and classic style.

1. Gingham

Thanks to the success of the Barbie movie, Gingham patterns are a trend to look out for in 2024. Gingham saw its heyday during the 1950s and 60s with the pattern seen on dresses, swimwear, and bedspreads. The gingham trend in 2024 will experiment with the pattern’s colors and size of the print. The trend will start with colors like red and black, and then transition into pastel colors for spring and summer. The checkered pattern and color give the gingham pattern a playful and lively aesthetic that will be favored during the summer. The pattern is also widely available making it easily accessible in sustainable options from vintage to second-hand.

2. Beads, Buttons, & Brooches

With bows currently seeing a height in popularity, other bits and bob-type accessories will follow in trend. Beads, buttons, and brooches come in various sizes and shapes allowing for more customization. This fashion choice for individuality has been steadily growing popular with the Jane Birkin Bag trend where people attach charms, chains, and paint drawings on their handbags. Previously in 2016, single charms like Fendi were popular with celebrities like Kylie Jenner, whereas this trend is more accessible and satisfies people’s desire for something one-of-a-kind. These items can easily be found in thrift stores and Etsy making the trend sustainable and a great way to spruce up a boring item already in your closet.

3. Large Bags

Small bags are out, and large bags are in. Sorry, Jacquemus.

In 2023, we saw larger bags like the Bottega Veneta Jodie and Christian Dior Book Tote featured on celebrities it is only time for mid-tier brands like Coach and Tory Burch to follow suit. Following the tote bag trend favored in 2022 and 2023, larger handbags fit the practicality of totes but elevates the overall outfit.  Large bags not only make for visual statements but also cater to more practical needs. This would follow the beads, buttons, and brooches trend with the bag allowing more space for individuality and customization using accessories.

4. Ponchos

Trends come and go, but I believe ponchos are back in style for 2024. Taking inspiration from the 1970s, ponchos can be a statement piece or a subtle jacket to layer.

5. Kitten Heels

As the late 90s fashion aesthetic continues to dominate current fashion trends, I believe kitten heels are the next fashion trend that will see a resurgence. The kitten heel is a short stiletto heel popularized by Audrey Hepburn in the 1960s. This heel features a feminine and elegant look without sacrificing comfort. This gives kitten heels a timeless look that can elevate any outfit from jeans to skirts. The smaller heel also gives a dainty and playful aesthetic compared to a classic heel. Opting for vintage shopping not only embraces the classic charm of kitten heels but also aligns with sustainable fashion practices.
