Predicting 2023 Fashion Trends

It is the beginning of a new year which means new fashion trends will be experimented. Trend predictions do not come out of thin air with innovators being the first to pick up a trend. The early adopters are usually the ones influencing the early majority. Once the trend hits more attention from influencers and the early majority, the trend is accepted by the late majority and makes the trend mainstream. I am going to be predicting early fashion trends I believe will eventually be picked up by the late majority.

A kind reminder that these predictions are based on my own personal opinion and experience. I am by no means a fashion trend expert but have past experience being an early adopter of a few trends.

1. Sheer

A recent article by Cosmopolitan named ‘Sheer Bliss’ as a fashion trend to look out for in 2023. Sheer is a transparent garment that is easily versatile and can be layered. Underwear as outwear has seen increasing popularity over the past decade with Sheer Bliss taking it a step further. Using different materials such as mesh, crotchet, or lace to give a transparent look. In 2023, I believe we will see the rise of these materials as well as different non-textile materials such as body chains and chain mail.

2. Capri Pants

You have probably heard the saying that trends come and go. I believe capri pants are coming back in trend for 2023, but taking inspiration from the retro notes of the 1950s and 60s. Icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Bridgette Bardot will be the main source of inspiration for this trend. As cropped pants become more popular in 2022, I believe these slim and fitted looks are inevitable for a comeback.

3. Long Denim Skirts

Mini skirts have been all the rage this recent year as many 2000s trends have fashion in a current chokehold. I expect to see a trend from the mid-to-late 2010s: long denim skirts. This year, long denim skirts will be seen in a variety of shapes from fitted to flared. Once the trend hits the early majority, I predict a mixture of colors and materials using bedazzles and embroidery will eventually be experiemented with.

4. Eyelet Lace

As the late 90s and early 2000s continue to dominate current fashion trends, I believe eyelet lace is the next fashion trend that will be seeing a resurgence. Eyelet lace is small, or big, cut-out patterns that are embroidered with stitches. Eyelet lace saw its height in popularity in the 90s lasting until the mid-2000s with many runway looks and being featured in magazines and cinema. With similar trends of cottage core and Coquette aesthetics favored in current fashion trends, eyelet lace follows that pattern of being more sweet and rustic than typical lace.
